Nekoosa, with a population of approximately
2,600, is situated on the beautiful Wisconsin River. Nekoosa is located
on State Highways 73 and 173 as well as on County Trunk Highway AA.
A recently expanded
bridge has been built across
the Wisconsin River to the Town of Saratoga replacing the old steel
structure that had been serving the two communities from 1916 to
1963. Prior to that time, two ferries served traffic across the river.
The one near the present business center being called the "Upper
Ferry" and the cable ferry located about as half mile below
the mill was called the "Lower Ferry".
The business establishments
of Nekoosa maintain friendly personnel and offer services and merchandise
at competitive
prices. The city’s
main street along with its decorative brick, tree plantings, and
wide sidewalks with benches makes the business district a pleasant
place to shop.
Riverside Park is an attractive and spacious
picnic site located on the Wisconsin River on the north side of the
city. It is well equipped
to accommodate large and small picnic groups. A beautiful setting enhances
the swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts and baseball diamonds
available for residents of the area during the summer months.
Nekoosa is the northern gateway to the large Petenwell Lake resort
area. By virtue of the bridge crossing the Wisconsin River at this
point, both sides of the lake are easily accessible to residents
and visitors. A boat landing located on the south side of the city
on Point Basse Avenue provides easy access to Lake Petenwell for
boaters and fisherman.
